Face to Face Media

Face to Face Media is an independent media production company founded in 1993 that specializes in documentaries for public broadcast and educational video collections for use in professional development and in the classroom. The production offices are based in Vancouver, Canada. The principals of the company are Gary Marcuse and Betsy Carson.

Gary Marcuse

Gary Marcuse is an independent journalist and filmmaker with a background in environmental planning. He holds a BFA in Fine Arts and a Master’s Degree in Regional Environmental Planning from Cornell. He is a former freelance broadcaster and a programming executive for CBC Radio and Television in Vancouver. He is a former chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada.

His television documentaries, produced by Betsy Carson, include a three-part series on the origins of environmental movements in North America (Nuclear Dynamite), Russia (Arktika), and China (Waking the Green Tiger, A Green Movement Rises in China) commissioned by the CBC for The Nature of Things.

Educational media productions include the award-winning documentary The Mind of a Child co-produced with Betsy Carson and Lorna Wanosts’a7 Williams (1994), filmed in Mount Currie and Israel, and First Nations, The Circle Unbroken, a collection of 25 documentaries that explore Aboriginal history and culture and the consequences of colonialism and residential schools. Both projects were widely used in schools and universities in Canada and the U.S.

He is currently the project director for the Global Environmental Justice Documentaries collection, curated by faculty and designed for undergraduate education. This collection features films at the intersection of environmental protection and human rights. The project is supported by the Luce Foundation and the Global Reporting Centre. Betsy Carson

Betsy Carson is an award-winning producer, executive producer, and director with more than 35 years of experience. She has collaborated for decades with directors Nettie Wild, Mark Achbar, Velcrow Ripper, Gary Marcuse, and Hugh Brody, and has produced over 100 hours of innovative projects ranging from television, theatrical features, VR, and websites to public art installations.

Among her credits are 500 Days in the Wild; The New Corporation: The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel; the Global Environmental Justice Documentaries Project; KONELĪNE: Our Land Beautiful; Occupy Love; Waking the Green Tiger; Surviving Progress; and War in the Mind. The films Betsy has collaborated on have won numerous awards and honours, including multiple Genie and Gemini awards, AFI, Berlin, Hot Docs, IDA, Prism, Grantham, two Cinema for Peace nominations, and other awards.

She also served as Co-Vice-Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada for six years.
